North Tonawanda is conveniently located between Buffalo and Niagara Falls at the junction of the historic Erie Barge Canal and the Niagara River.  The Erie Barge Canal binds the city on the west by the Niagara River and on the south and east.  The name "Tonawanda" was taken from the Tonawanda Creek, which flows into the Niagara River.  "Tonawanda" is an Iroquois word meaning "swift running water."

Settlement of the city began in the early 1800's.  In 1897 North Tonawanda was granted a  city charter.  Development has continued to a present population of approximately 36,000.

The community is conveniently located for travel in all directions and a system of modern highways connects North Tonawanda to Niagara Falls, Buffalo, Toronto, and the New York State Thruway.

A Mayor governs the city and five elected Common Council Members.  An excellent level of municipal services is provided ranging from leaf, snow and waste removal to paid police and fire protection.

The cost of housing in North Tonawanda and Western New York is one of the lowest in the United States and is an added enticement to residing in the area. 

Three hospitals, one 170 bed facility located in North Tonawanda, and two others just minutes away provide excellent medical services.  Also, located nearby are two world-renowned facilities, Roswell Park Memorial Institute and the Children's Hospital of Buffalo.  In addition, a number of skilled nursing facilities exist in the immediate area as well as modern senior citizen housing and community centers.
